Well, my abstract-sequential head is still spinning. My biggest challenge each week is to try to create a structure into which every aspect of our class can fit in a sequential manner. This may not be impossible, but it definitely makes my head hurt. Once I have somewhat accomplished conceptualizing our class and its assignments, the week is almost up, and I still face the real biggest challenge: getting the work done. I think I would benefit from deep-breathing exercises.
I actually think I like social studies, but there seems to be little time available to think about it (although, maybe that's what I'm doing right now). I am hoping to learn more about social studies, and good strategies and styles that are particularly effective for teaching social studies. Creating a social studies unit from scratch in a step-by-step process seems like an arduous path to take, filled with moments of feeling lost and confused, but I am imaging that it will approximate the sometimes lonely job of of a first-year teacher who struggles to organize and construct a year of units and lessons for the first time. No gain without pain, they say. The children will provide the joy, if the teacher does his job well.

I would like to know more about resources that are structured to assist teachers in unit and lesson planning. And I would like tips and ideas on how to do it better.

Hi Mac,
I can understand your pain...my randomness can cause the sequentials some discomfort. Each week I try to balance giving you as much as I possibly can about ss, teaching strategies, management, resources and so forth - with making sure you have some basics about teaching ss. It is a tough balance because there is so much I want you all to know.
The unit planning...well, it is what it is. It will get easier each week. I like your suggestion about Web resources and unit planning. I have a few I will pass along.
Tim
